On Kaua’i, Birds’ Friday Night Flights Turn Out the Lights on Prep Games

It is a frequent sight during autumn evenings on the island of Kauai: young seabirds mistake the lights of a football stadium for the moon and stars during their migration to the ocean, causing them to become disoriented, fall from the sky and die.

The deaths of the birds has become such a problem that officials at the three high schools on the island have canceled Friday night football for the entire season and moved the games to Saturday afternoon.

Families rally against school furloughs

The Governor calls the group misinformed, and says the teachers union is sticking with a proposal the state can’t afford.

They’ve taken part in a sit-in at the Governor’s office and camped out outside the Governor’s mansion. On Sunday, members of Save Our Schools Hawaii held a rally at the state Capitol demanding an end to furlough Fridays.

More than 100 people gathered for the event. The Legislature says it needs a solution by this week if instructional days are to be restored any time soon.

State lawmakers say they need the Hawaii State Teachers Association, the Board of Education and the Department of Education to resolve the financial differences they have with Governor Lingle. Their deadline has been extended to Wednesday.

Chanting and waving signs, parents, students and others took part in a down-to-the-wire push to convince the parties in the school furlough dispute to reach a compromise that will get children back into the classroom.

Ka’ala Farm teaches lessons taught centuries ago

Deep in the heart of Wai’anae valley lives a place untouched by modern technology. No iPods here. Just a guitar in your arms, and a song on your lips.

Folks at Ka’ala Farm live the way native Hawaiians did hundreds of years ago.

“Their ancestors are the ones that survived in these areas,” said Butch Detroye, who helps run Ka’ala Farm. “They sustained life for generations inside here and all of that aloha they put to sustaining life, that’s the aloha that’s still here.”

Isle bankruptcies increase at breakneck pace

Hawaii residents filed 64.4 percent more bankruptcy cases last month than in June of last year, according to preliminary figures from U.S. Bankruptcy Court.

As of yesterday afternoon, 268 bankruptcies had been filed, versus the 163 filed last June.

The 1,473 filings for the first half of this year dwarf the 889 cases filed in the first six months of last year, a rise of 65.77 percent.
